Goddam, I love Florida

Their Republicans make our Oregon Republicans look like freaking mental giants.

In this case, by proposing that the great State of Florida issue a "Jesus" license plate.

Yes, I shit you not.As Blue Gal reminds us, try and picture the scene where some widely-known Jesus-pesterer such as Mel Gibson gets pulled over, drunk off his ass and calling the female officer "Sugar Tits" and the arresting officer "Kikey-pants" (or something equally Protocols of the Elders of Zionish, anyway) and his rig shows up on the 6-o'clock-news getting towed away sportin' the ever-loving bleeding cocoanut of our Lord and Savior on the bumper.

I mean, I enjoy watching my enemies thoroughly crap their pants, too, but, geez, guys, are you making this too easy or what?

Say it with me now reeeeeal slow: "Sep-a-ra-tion of church and staaaate."

You know Chief, I'm one of those guys who, even though I'm a Christian, born again, former Republican kool-aid drinker, was once a fundementalist till I actually started thinking, and now quite comfortable in my faith, finds this whole thing quite.seriously.scary.

I'm not sure if you ever read the book, or seen the movie "Handmaids tale" but there are times when I hear the Republican Right Wing Religious whack jobs talk about the US as a "Christian Nation"
(btw, as a historian I add a resounding "HA! Where's the evidence?" to their declaration)
that I start thinking, "how much of a seer(read: Prophet) was/is Margret Atwood?"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid's_Tale

Sheerah: If these yoyos were any smarter I'd worry, but their own ham-handedness and idiocy makes it unlikely that they'd be capable of organizing a child's birthday party, much less a theocratic oppressive state...

For now, at least, they provide nothing but cynical entertainment...

Minnesota Republicans, at least one of them, might take the freaking insanity cake. Our comely reptilian Michelle Bachmann was on "pajamas media" suggesting that Democrats are responsible, somehow, she's not saying for sure, she's just saying, for the Swine Flu.

Rick: Mmm, yeah, that does kinda get the "Sweetbabyjesusonastick!" award for WTF.

Dear God! Capitol of Ignorance, stupidity and medieval-ness -- We're it, baby!

The last time I went to get a license, I had to wait 10 minutes behind a lady waxing philosophic over Georgia's NASCAR plates, and why can't FLA get with it, already! Which led into their favoritelis NASCAR events. . .

Don't think for an instant these tags won't help the bearers escape a ticket or two, as the ranks of the police are famously filled with conservative Baptist-types. (Who would not take kindly to your educated references to The Handmaid's tale, Sheerah. Akin to blasphemy!)

Lisa: Mmmmyeah, I'm sorry to say that between the Christopaths, Marielitos and Batista-philes, real estate developers, creaking legions of geezers...

Let's say that I've developed a certain wry appreciation for the acidic observations of your man Carl Hiaasen.

Oh yes -- Carl Hiassen got his best stuff from the morgue at the Miami Herald. It's all there for us every day of the week, which is why I will not subscribe to a FL paper

Though mostly, it's because the horror is reported rife with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes in the local paper. I remember the day I could take it no more -- fr. a local obit feature: "Native of Whales Dies."

Finis.

"(Who would not take kindly to your educated references to The Handmaid's tale, Sheerah. But seriously, I wonder about the Handmaids tale...tbph, that was the first book that I read that made me seriously think about my politics, and after I set it down, I thought about her book for quite some time, after which I realized that some things I had advanced I had never seriously considered what the long term implications could lead too.
This re-evaluation only made me think more about what was being taught by the fundementalist subculture in the American church, and eventually led me to reconsider my thoughts, my actions, and my words in support of all things Fundamentalist. This also brought about a independent study (meaning, without outside commentary) of the bible, and I concluded after a long, careful consideration that we, the American church was on the wrong side of G-d on this issue. So, even though the church hasn't changed (some have, but not everyone) I have changed, and thats what is most important to me.

Sheerah: If you haven't yet, you might want to check Fred Clark's blog "slacktivist". He's an interesting guy, a Christian and evangelical who broke hard with the Religious Right when he realized that not only did their stuff not make much sense in the "make sense" sense but that a hell of a lot of their interpretation of their own religion and Scripture were so skewed as to be flat out fuckin' insane. He always gives me some interesting insight into the outlook of someone who comes to faith from the "Religious Left"

Sheerah: Oops. Meant to drop the url for the Clark blog.

Worth a read, if nothing else for his take on the appalling "Left Behind" books.

Chief,
/ugh
How can I be diplomatic about this...um...I have spent the better part of the past...what...eight...ten years...yeah, something like that...I have purposefully tried not to think about those...hmm...I really hate elevating those things to.../sigh...books, but yeah, you owe me a beer for making me think about them.
I'll check him out, anyone who has started reading those books and couldn't finish them due to the imminent threat of their colon throttling their brain in a desperate bid to save itself can't be all to bad.

Sheerah,

The Handmaid's Tale is frightfully prescient, no? And women go as lambs to slaughter. It is still many a teenage girl's dream to become "Of Fred," while they end up becoming offred ("offered".)

I'm glad you mentioned it, as it ties into my thinking on denial. Perhaps I can whip something up soon synthesizing my thoughts.
